According to Education.com, the physical and emotional consequences of being a victim of bullying can be severe. Children who are bullied are:
- At greater risk of depression and lower self-esteem later in life.
- More likely to report migraine and non-migraine headaches.
- Prone to missing more school because of excused and unexcused absences.
- At higher risk for running away from home.
- More likely to have problems with alcohol and drug use.
Unfortunately, bullying is an epidemic in our society. But parents have the ability to help stop bullying. Here’s a summary of Education.com’s top 10 actions you can take to help address the bullying issue:
- Talk with and listen to your kids - everyday.
- Spend time at school and recess.
- Be a good example of kindness and leadership.
- Learn the signs.
- Create healthy anti-bullying habits early.
- Help your child’s school address bullying effectively.
- Establish household rules about bullying.
- Teach your child how to be a good witness.
- Teach your child about cyberbullying.
- Spread the word that bullying should not be a normal part of childhood.
